The Sobering Center (aka The Houston Center for Sobriety) was Houston Recovery Center’s flagship service. The Sobering Center provides safe, short-term monitoring and management of persons under the influence of alcohol and drugs with capacity to serve 68 men and 16 women. When a person is picked up for public intoxication, law enforcement brings them to our center to sober. Clients avoid getting an arrest record and being booked into jail. The sobering experience begins and ends with compassion. When clients arrive they are:
Welcomed by a Recovery Support Specialist.
Given a basic health screening by an Emergency Medical Technician.
Brought to the dorm to rest for about 4-6 hours where their sobering is regularly monitored.
Interviewed by a Recovery Support Specialist about their substance use and personal concerns.
Provided referrals to resources or enrolled in recovery programs upon request.
Contacted with a follow-up phone call after discharge upon request.
Client property is inventoried, securely stored and returned at discharge. If by chance the client cannot be admitted to the Sobering Center, they are transported to the service appropriate to their medical, psychological or safety needs.
