Sober center: just what the doctor ordered

The idea of letting the town drunk dry out behind bars is a beloved and enshrined aspect of Americana. Who doesn’t love Otis from “The Andy Griffith Show”?

City budget writers, for one. Houston spends $4 million to $6 million every year to process around 17,000 public intoxication cases at the city jail. Mayberry, we are not. The Houston Center for Sobriety, which opened downtown last week, should help bring that cost back in control.
