The Senate’s tax plan would cut alcohol taxes. That would be a public health disaster.

While the alcohol industry has been lobbying for tax cuts for years, they are the opposite of what public health researchers and drug policy experts have long recommend. That’s because alcohol is linked to 88,000 deaths each year in the US — more than all drug overdoses, guns, or car crashes. Based on the research, a higher tax could help reduce that death toll by cutting back on excessive drinking.
