There are a wide variety of factors that contribute to homelessness both here in our state and throughout the rest of the country. That is why the Houston Recovery Center plays an integral role in the continuum of care system in Texas.

A network of housing, law enforcement, healthcare, mental health, and substance use service providers are coming together into a continuum of care to decrease homelessness, recidivism, and unnecessary emergency resource utilization. Continuum of care programs in Texas must be diligent and well-planned in order to address each of these factors if they hope to see improvements on this front. The Houston Recovery Center helps with one major factor that drives homelessness, recidivism, and unnecessary emergency resource utilization: substance use disorder.

How our resources help Texas homeless assistance programs

Here at the Houston Recovery Center, 88 percent of the clients who we work with are homeless. They either come in to our facility on their own, or they are referred to our facility by medical professionals or law enforcement.

Our services are particularly crucial to the larger success of homeless assistance programs in Texas because of how common substance use disorder is in the homeless population.  Substance use disorder in the homeless population can result in:

  • Spending an already limited income on drugs and alcohol
  • Making it difficult to hold a job
  • Developing and exacerbating medical and mental health conditions
  • Creating legal trouble
  • And more

Continuum of care programs in Texas need to address the root causes of substance use and homelessness in order to prompt long-term solutions. The Houston Recovery Center not only provides a safe, temporary space where intoxicated clients can sober up, but we offer long-term addiction counseling and referrals that can put these clients on the path to recovery.
